THE CANADIAN MAPLE STORY

Hockey Isn’t the Only Thing Canada Does Well

When I think Canada, I think hockey. I think cold weather, strong accents, and generally awesome people. What I don’t think though, is skateboards; or quite frankly, anything to do with them. Contrary to popular belief, when it comes down to making high end skateboards, Canada comes up huge in the production department! With Canada being home to the infamous Canadian Maple, skateboarders all around the world seek the materials that it produces. With the long winters that Canada has, it is of huge benefit to producing quality material to build skateboards. These long, harsh winters allow the trees to mature slowly and the result is tight growth rings, which produce incredibly strong trees, which in turn produce very strong veneer.

The veneer produced here isn’t just some random veneer that can be used for flooring or cabinets. No, this is made specifically for skateboard lamination! I don’t know about you, but when I am buying a board, I certainly want to be sure that the veneer is of high quality. With the chances of splitting and cracking reduced, it provides additional strength and stability making the finish product stronger than natural wood. Most would say that one of the primary advantages of using veneer is the stability it provides. Obviously the stability and strength are extremely important, but so is the flexibility. With these boards from beyou, the best material to make skateboards around is utilized, aiming for a combination of strength and flexibility. The best of both worlds!

Skateboard Decks can vary quite a bit, but a typical deck is made up of 7 layers of veneer; 5 long and 2 cross grain. The great Canadian Maple spits out a 1.5mm thickness of veneer. There are two different long board setups offered as well. A 7 layer set, which consists of 5 long and 2xband; and a 9 layer set, which consists of 7 long and 2xband. All of the veneer used is premium grade, rotary-cut, kiln-dried stock. Again, this is some of the best skateboard deck making veneer available and I am sure that you will not be disappointed!

All in all, at the end of the day when I am looking to make a purchase such as a skateboard or longboard, I am looking for quality. If the quality of the products is poor, board itself is going to be poor. It is refreshing to hear what goes into the making of these boards. It certainly gives me a piece of mind when I am riding that what I’m standing on is it the best material in existence. Before you purchase a board, make sure and educate yourself on the materials used to make it. Don’t settle for less than the best!
