How The Attractive Marquetry Skateboards Are Made In Bryon Bay

Marquetry has to do with the assemblage of contrasting wood pieces in geometric patterns, shapes, and scenes. Like puzzle pieces, it is a type of inlay that deals with the act of assembling and gluing thin pieces of veneer to the surface of a core.

Primarily, the material employed in making marquetry skateboards consists of a variety of natural wood veneers. Both in grain and in color, the appearance of the veneer can vary greatly. Literally, these veneers are obtained from many tree species around the world.

In order to create the desired artistic impression, Beyou marquetarians are proficient with selecting veneers which are usually done based on the right combination color, grain, and texture. After the completed design has been mounted, a finish is then applied in order onto the marquetry. All these figuration and infinite variety of grain and veneers always result in a unique one-of-a-kind skateboard.

The marquetry on skateboards is handcrafted which involves a lot of woodworking and shape cutting. After a particular design has been selected, it is then traced onto the veneer with black carbon paper after which the shape will then be cut out cleanly.

Until the desired effect of the figure, grain and color are displayed, the veneer placed behind the resulting hole will continuously be moved, after which the veneer will then be placed into the resulting cutout. To make for a steady job, a few small pieces of tape will be used to secure the insert veneer before the required piece is cut. During this process, the edge of the resulting hole is usually used as a cutting guide.

Before the insert piece can be removed, there is need to tape the window lightly and then rub glue into the joints so as to fasten the insert in place. While ensuring that the insert fits perfectly into the window, the window itself is also used as the guide.

This is how each piece is added which then results in the finished picture on the veneer sheet. This often allows for the best use of the grain, figure and color of the veneer because the insert veneer can easily be moved around to yield the desired effect.

Marquetry on skateboards is carried out by expert marquetarians in Byron Bay who are specialists in handling the knife which often requires a firm grip so as to be able to make several continued cuts in multiple veneers.

When cutting out the veneers, multiple light passes are essentially made to ensure that the knife blade follows the desired trajectory and avoid following the grain of the wood. Although the process can be quite time-consuming, but it is worth it. This is how the attractive marquetry skateboards are made.
